This fall, Hamilton will be running in West Herr Auditorium Theatre, the highest rated theatre of Rochester plus, the No.1 possible theatre for the global phenomenon Musical. The critically acclaimed and multi-award winning show goes on to tell its magnificent tale from theatre to theatre all over the globe.
Debuting off Broadway in 2015, The Musical was not the instant Broadway play that you will see now. Lin-Manuel Miranda has talked candidly about its inspiration, starting as a concept album in 2009, with Miranda sharing that he was “thrilled that the White House called me tonight, because I’m actually working on a hip-hop album. It's a concept album about the life of someone I think embodies hip-hop: treasury secretary Alexander Hamilton.” That singular performance gained praise and a well-earned standing ovation from his crowd at the time, including former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, and ultimately led to Miranda’s creation of the Hamilton musical we see now.
Due to his previous experience in musical theater, Lin-Manuel Miranda has also found influences from other award-winning theater pieces such as Les Misérables, which holds to a common theme that tells the history of a struggle, and overcoming that struggle, as opposed to the typical musical theatre biases that follow the trend of being very uplifting and happy. Hamilton is no different, being about the difficulties arising as an orphaned immigrant from the Caribbean who rose to power and became the first U.S. Treasury Secretary. With the utmost respect to its source material, the Musical shows us both the good and bad in Alexander Hamilton’s rise to power, by not only giving us a peek into his character and struggle, but also his influence and lasting legacy in being able to powerfully shape America during his lifetime.
With its story, the show continues to prove its timelessness in American culture and even on the international stage, confronting themes and challenges that are deeply relevant not only to the Country, but also globally. Even the use of musical styles of hip hop, jazz, and R&B as the shows score has cemented its place in pop culture, making it one of the most exciting hit Rochester musicals today.
