& Juliet at West Herr Auditorium Theatre

When compared to the original storyline of the Shakespearean play which debuted live on stage roughly forty decades ago, critics have discerned the many alterations that were implemented to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly newer musical based on the same leading lady. Shakespeare’s original plot is centered around the tragic tale that takes place because of rash decision-making and the unbridled passion of two lovers, which results in the suicide of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragedy and instead chooses a more positive outlook by concentrating on the infinite possibilities of life, even after such tragic experiences.

This messaging is evident in the new musicall’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her circle of friends, who head to Paris to embrace their identities not just as individuals, but as remarkable women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist interpretation through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes command of her husband’s story and changes the ending of his popular classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a second opportunity to shine, while introducing new and equally capable women to the cast. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the show is able to incorporate contemporary culture, specifically songs from recent decades, that reflect the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the ladies throughout the musical. Even the clothing worn by the play’s characters give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while presenting the contrast between the ongoing musical and the previous classic by pairing Elizabethan attire and iconography with today’s costume styles. Each aspect of the show was carefully thought-out to symbolize empowerment and "being able to write your own story".

This December’s limited season of ‘& Juliet’ sees it opening in New York, where Rochester's West Herr Auditorium Theatre is proud to host this up-and-coming jukebox musical on Saturday 13th December 2025.
